Licensing a skip
The purpose of licensing a skip is to ensure that they do not become a burden to local areas. Most skip licenses will be issued for a fortnight period. This should be sufficient for most on-off projects where a skip is required. It is important to bear in mind that a license is only actually required if the skip is being positioned on the public highway. If you have off road positioning for a skip (with suitable access for the lorry), you will be able to keep a skip for much longer, depending on what hire agreement you make with the skip hire company.
Obtaining a license may seem like unnecessary hassle, but they are fairly easy to obtain. The license enables local authorities to ensure that skips are not causing a nuisance such as by blocking the public highway. It is important that skips are parked away from junctions, do not block access to property and do not cause a hazard on the highway. By licensing skips, it is far easier to identify any issues regarding skip use than if they were completely unregulated.
In the London area, different boroughs have their own approaches to licensing skip hire. In many boroughs it is possible for the skip hire company to arrange for the license on your behalf.
