Don’t be put off by the rules

So, why exactly do you need a license for skip hire?

Skips are licensed for a variety of reasons, and as with all rules and regulations, some of the reasons are more obvious, some of them slightly less so and some of them probably seem completely odd to the average layperson. Like it or not, rules do apply to both skip hire and waste management in general, and part of ensuring your skip hire runs smoothly is making sure you do not fall foul of these rules.

Skip licenses are only actually required if you are locating a skip on the public highway. The license enables the council to make sure that skips are located sensibly so that they are not a hazard, and also so that they do not become long term fixtures. In some areas licenses can be arranged on your behalf by the skip hire company, whilst other local authorities require the customer to arrange this. Skips located on private land will not need a license, although it helps if you do have either the right or permission to use the off-road location.

Wherever you locate the skip, further rules apply to what waste can be disposed of in them. Generally most of it is common sense, with hazardous material being prohibited.
