The process of recycling

It all starts with collection and this involves a rubbish skip which is large, open topped container specially designed for loading waste, or rubbish directly from your home, office or construction site.

Skip hire is fairly common today, simply pick up the phone and order.  The skip, attached to a special skip carrying lorry will be dropped off for loading by yourself and collected at an agreed time thereafter.  Skips are a perfect way to get of your unwanted garbage or debris.

Once your waste has been loaded it is once again collected by the skip hire company, loaded on the special skip carrying lorry and taken away for recycling.

The Process

Waste and waste materials need to be sorted and this is done in stages.  Firstly the waste is removed from the skip and placed on a conveyor belt, spread out evenly so that the larger pieces such as cardboard or plastic can be picked out by hand.  The next stage separates the waste materials by weight, at the same time splitting paper and plastic from glass or metals.  It is possible for a full skip load to be sorted in less than an hour.

Magnets separate out ferrous metals and glass is sorted by colour.

Recycling efforts in the United Kingdom have contributed to a reduction in CO2 emmissions by about 10 to 15 million tonnes per year and it is most efficient in densely populated areas.

Certain criteria however have to be met in order for recycling can be both economically and environmentally effective.
