Skip hire firms fined for lack of licenses

Five skip hire companies in the UK were recently handed penalty fines totally almost £5,000 for operating outside the law.

Caught by enforcement officers, none were in possession of the required paperwork even though they were aware of Council procedures and in fact had accounts with the council.  The Cabinet Member for the Environment commented by saying that the need to license skips came from practical reasons such as determining whether a proposed location was safe or not as well as the need to regulate the amount of skips using the roads.

He further said that it was not the responsibility of those who hire the skip, nor do they need to know where to place a skip legally.  The integrity falls solely on the skip operators who are registered and licensed operators.

He also said that the court actions against them as well as the fines imposed on them should send out a very clear message that Council will not tolerate unlicensed activities on the street.  In fact one of the offending companies had already faced court action was a contributing factor to and was reflected in the high fine of £1,635 meted out to them.  In fact they were guilty of 34 previous convictions in all.  The case had to be approved in their absence as they did not attend the hearing.

The offending and unlicensed skips came to the attention of council officers via the complaints of residents.

The other companies were each penalized with fines ranging from £835 to £1545.Two of the companies had previous convictions as well, one had eleven and the other had seven.

Ensure when choosing a skip hire company, you choose one with a good reputation, such as Simpsons Skip Hire.
