The complexity of skip regulations in London

July 27th, 2010

Skip regulations often appear to be complicated. If you have not used a skip in the past, the array of regulations which you have to comply with can be quite daunting. This is especially the case if you are living in London. Given London’s large population and perennial difficulties with congestion, this might not surprise you. However, it is the variation in regulations between diverse local authorities which makes it tricky for inexperienced London householders.

Skip regulations can be straightforward, but some of them can be very detailed. This is why it makes sense to go with an experienced local provider. They will be well acquainted with all the relevant minutiae which is necessary to respect in order to operate properly in that specific location. Their knowledge with regard to the ins and outs of skip hire permits and the like could be very beneficial indeed. Trying to get these things correct independently, perhaps in collaboration with a new building firm, can be time-consuming and you cannot afford to make an error.

In relation to the permits, various local authorities have different expiry dates. It is important that you have a permit if your skip is on the public highway. Along with the local regulatory framework, it is vital to act within the constraints of national legislation. Important laws include the Highways Act 1980 and the 1984 Road Traffic Regulations Act, Section 139. At Simpsons Skip Hire of London we have considerable experience at successfully working within the intricate system and our expertise can save you time and money.

An innovation in waste management

July 23rd, 2010

Waste management is a crucial part of our lives. The way we dispose of our waste will influence the lives of future generations. The choices that we make will have local, regional, national and global consequences. Recycling is one method by which we can limit our impact on the natural world. Not everything can be recycled, but developments to increase recycling are worthy of our attention. Hiring a skip can help keep waste displosal organised.

Windsor and Maidenhead Council are pioneers in the recycling sector. They have introduced a points system to encourage their residents to recycle even more. This innovative approach may well have an influence outside their district because councils around the country are looking to learn from good practice. Landfill sites are filling up and various initiatives will be used to drive up recycling rates. Hiring a skip before sending the waste to a recycling centre can help keep it together. However, even recycling consumes scarce resources, so sustainable development will have to be promoted.

Sustainable development is a contested concept, in that it is open to competing interpretations. However, the basic principle is that economic development should be socially and environmentally sustainable. Innovative ideas, like those of Windsor and Maidenhead Council, are like tiny pieces in a wider puzzle. It is vital that positive ways forward are rolled out across wider geographical areas. Drawing attention to progressive advances in waste management increases the chances of emulation.

At Simpsons Skip Hire of London, we know that excellent waste disposal is central to people having healthy and happy futures. Hence environmental responsibilities are taken very seriously. A skip may be delivered very efficiently, but that is only part of the work that is done on your behalf.

Global temperatures high this year

July 20th, 2010

One of the reasons why efficient waste management is so vital is the threat posed by climate change. When considering the importance of local waste management, it is a mistake to be confused by the vagaries of the local weather. What we do with our rubbish eventually influences the international climate, not the local weather in the short term. Hiring a skip can help keep waste management oragnised, and consulting a skip hire company you trust is vital.

The latest findings for 2010 underline the significance climate change may have for people and planet. Manmade climate change is already having a profound impact in certain regions of the globe, but the projections and the latest statistics point towards this impact becoming more much serious and much more widely felt.

The US National Snow and Ice Data Centre indicated that the Artic ice has melted at a much faster pace than usual in 2010. The statistics they released demonstrated that melting began sooner than normal in March, and they expected the process to last into September. Meteorologists have informed ‘The Guardian’ that global surface temperatures have been very high in the first few months of the year. Hence it would appear that the latest climate news is far from reassuring. While it is always important not to be carried away by one or two data sets, it does continue to appear that ‘climate change deniers’ may have their work cut out in the years to come.

Waste management is relevant to climate change in many ways. Even some of the ‘greener’ strategies, such as recycling, can involve considerable energy use. At Simpsons Skip Hire of London, we are concerned about the environment and are conscious of our responsibilities, and have an ethical approach when hiring our skips out.

Skips fascinate

July 17th, 2010

Many people find skips fascinating. They find it very difficult to walk past a skip without taking a good look at its contents. Some of them go further and try to get waste out of the container. On occasion, rash individuals clamber inside and take pieces of rubbish which interest them. Of course, such behaviour raises issues of health and safety. It cannot be condoned, but it does illustrate how fascinating skips are.

At Simpsons Skip Hire of London, we can assure you that our interest in our field of expertise exceeds that of enthusiastic amateurs. However, unlike the enthusiasm of some amateurs, this interest is neither idle nor foolish. It is professional and focused on delivering the best possible service to our clients. Waste management is a very serious business, and to perform it responsibly takes considerable application. Given the dimensions of the ecological crises we all face, this attitude is the only sensible one.

Although the media coverage of the ecological problems people will have to contend with fluctuates in tone and content, it is clear that even if major adjustments are made, future traumas are inevitable. It is not just about climate change, as pollution will also take its toll. Proper waste disposal is vital.

Getting the right kind of skip is important. Practical assistance can be provided to people who have various types of waste to dispose of. It might be the remains of a small wall or it may be a larger amount of bricks and mortar. It is prudent to assess the situation with care and obtain help from a local firm with the required knowledge and skills.

A larger population makes waste management a significant priority

July 14th, 2010

According to figures published on the National Statistics Online site, the British population was estimated to be in excess of 61 million in 2008. This meant that the population had increased by 7 per cent since 1971. The population of London has increased substantially during that same period. This increase has obviously had many positive cultural and economic effects, but it has placed a degree of strain on parts of the urban infrastructure.

When an area is fortunate enough to attract a larger population of inhabitants, it is likely to benefit from increased economic growth. However, economic growth comes with associated externalities. Rubbish is just one of the typical externalities. Waste management is generally a big issue in crowded parts of the globe. Recycling is obviously one method of coping with high levels of waste production, but not everything can be recycled and recycling consumes energy, which is where a skip might come in handy. Limiting consumption is very difficult in practice. However, making manufacturers and retailers abide by regulations can reduce volumes of packaging, for example.

When you are responsible for the production of waste, you will want to ensure that it is not handled in an environmentally damaging manner. Not many of the keen gardeners in London want their unavoidable garden waste to become a real problem for others. People who are conscious of their environmental responsibilities can do well to seek guidance if they have considerable amounts of topsoil, turf or stones to get rid of, as hiring a skip could be a good idea. At Simpsons Skip Hire of London, we cater for the needs of environmentally concerned individuals.

Do not skip your responsibilities

July 11th, 2010

Sometimes, when you are having building work done, you have a lot on your mind. Will the extension be of the necessary standard? Will the loft conversion add value to your home? When will the work be properly finished? Such questions have plagued many of us down the years. However, it is important to remember that the world does not revolve around your concerns. It is vital to ensure that any waste from any part of the renovations is disposed of properly.

It is not simply a matter of checking out that workers have access to a skip. It is crucial to consider the size and location of that skip. If you reside in London, the necessary skip permit will have to be acquired. It is also imperative to remember that not everything can be placed in the skip without planning. Items of hazardous waste have to be treated with the necessary caution and in line with the relevant regulations. All of these factors have to be considered and dealt with.

Dealing with waste disposal can seem like a low priority when you have a range of other concerns. However, it would be a grave error indeed to perceive rubbish management in this light. It always makes sense to obtain excellent professional guidance, and assistance from firms with experience and local knowledge. The geographical variability in the regulations underlines the advisability of this step. At Simpsons Skip Hire of London, we tick all the right boxes and have a long track record of satisfying our clients.

Fly-tipping is antisocial behaviour

July 8th, 2010

Antisocial behaviour has been condemned by politicians of all parties in recent years. Communities can be affected as adversely by antisocial behaviour to the extent that the problems it causes are almost as bad as economic difficulties. Fly-tipping is a pernicious type of antisocial behaviour. It can have a significant environmental impact, wherever it is done. The Environment Agency and other relevant waste management organisations are determined to clamp down on fly-tipping for this reason.

Whether we live in the city, in the suburbs or in a rural location, our lives can be blighted by fly-tipping. If we are in a secluded beauty spot, soaking up the sun, we do not want our views to be spoiled by somebody else’s trash. If we are on our way to work, we do not want our mood to be lowered by unsightly refuse. It can make any place look very ugly. It can also give any place the image of a space which is not cared for. Uncared for spaces can attract vandalism and provoke further antisocial behaviour. Fly-tipping is certainly a serious offence, and the penalties which can be incurred by those who dispose of rubbish in this careless manner can be severe. Hiring a skip can be a good way to avoid this.

If you have some rubbish, it is vital to dispose of it in a socially responsible manner, perhaps by using a skip. Waste management is about meeting your social and environmental obligations. At Simpsons Skip Hire of London, we can provide you with any advice or assistance that you require in relation to the proper disposal of bulky items of waste with a skip.

Making waste management as simple as ABC

July 5th, 2010

If you are having some building work done on your home, it can be a very stressful time. Your family can feel uncomfortable to say the least. There is much more to it than regularly making tea or coffee. Sometimes it may not be clear when the work will be finished. The worst case scenario is probably if you hire an unethical builder who leaves you in the lurch.

If there is some debris left when such a builder has departed, waste management may be something of an issue. Obtaining a skip at a reasonable price may seem a bit tricky. If you live in London, the skip hire regulations may confuse you. After having been through a traumatic experience, you may be in no mood to ascertain the ins and outs of the relevant legislation. Basically you have some waste and you want it removed quickly. That way your life can return to normal.

Not all skip hire firms have the experience and the knowledge to help you in this situation. A skip hire permit must be obtained and the waste disposal must be carried out properly. Any hazardous waste must be treated appropriately. A little patience on your part can be rewarded if you use the services of a thorough local firm. The price of ignoring relevant regulations is too high to pay.

At Simpsons Skip Hire of London, we have the necessary expertise to sort out your problem. Waste disposal should not drag you down.

Waste management is not simple in modern times

July 2nd, 2010

Due to the growing environmental challenges which confront people and planet, it is the case that waste management is gradually becoming a more complicated matter. It is proving difficult to limit or reduce consumption of material goods in a growth-focused world, so proper disposal of refuse and recycling are increasingly being adopted to help us cope. Although additional alterations in our behaviour are required to avert further ecological disasters, improvements in the way waste is handled have already had a beneficial effect.

When it comes to disposing of a considerable amount of garden waste or refuse related to building work, skip hire is a solution which comes to mind. The use of skip hire is an affordable way to deal with a significant volume of soil or rubble. However, in a society where people are slowly becoming more aware of their responsibilities with regard to their rubbish, it is vital to recall that not just anything can be got rid of in this way.

Things like gas bottles, asbestos, televisions, other domestic appliances and lighting equipment must never be put in a skip. These items contain substances which should not be disposed of in this fashion. Such substances can have a particularly detrimental impact on the environment if they are not treated with sufficient care and respect. At Simpsons Skip Hire of London, we have the necessary skills and commitment to deal efficiently with various types of domestic waste. It is also the case that information can be provided on the specific items which cannot be put into a skip.

Rules Of The Road

June 28th, 2010

In a congested city like London, it is understandable that there have to be restrictions on how domestic skip hire can be used in relation to the road network. While traffic is often travelling at a slow pace in any regard, anything which could act as a hindrance to traffic flow needs to be regulated with care. People who drive regularly in London and other road users will probably appreciate how vital it is to keep traffic moving. It would therefore be a dereliction of duty by the relevant authorities to permit citizens to place their skip hire anywhere they wanted.

If there is nowhere else available, you may well wish to situate your skip hire on the road. However, important rules have to be adhered to if this activity is going to be considered to be acceptable. Firstly, the skip cannot be located within a 15 metre distance from a junction for safety reasons. Secondly, it cannot be placed in such a way as to block the access route to a neighbour’s property. Thirdly, it has to be positioned in line with the roadside (parallel to the curb) so as not to cause unnecessary obstruction. Fourthly, it must be placed as close to the edge of the road as is feasible.

Some of these regulations may appear to some to be a little on the fussy side, but the next time they are stuck in traffic they might consider whether causing more blockages in the traffic flow would be wise. At Simpson Skip Hire of London we can answer all the queries you may have in our area of expertise.
